The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) will gather for its third edition at the UN Environment Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, 4-6 December, 2017. The event will provide the opportunity for regional governments, civil society and the private sector to engage with senior government officials and other relevant stakeholders, to allow them to play a more active role in environmental policy-making at the global level, and in the environmental governance and management at international, national, subnational and local levels.
This year the conference will focus on the theme of pollution (“Towards a Pollution-Free Planet”), specially in its different dimensions, costs, and measures that can be adopted to tackle it. The main objective of UNEA 3 is to obtain and promote commitments to end pollution. The outcomes of the Assembly include a political declaration on importance of taking action against pollution, while linked to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, thematic resolutions and decisions will be adopted by Member-States, as well as voluntary commitments by governments, private sector entities, civil society organizations and subnational authorities to clean up the planet. In this regard, UNEA 3 is also organizing the Clean Planet Pledge, which is a collection of individual commitments to take personal action.
nrg4SD is accredited to UN Environment since 2009 and has participated in all the previous UNEA meetings (previous editions took place in 2014 and 2016), representing the Local Authorities Major Group. It has done so with the objective of ensuring a strong voice of regional governments in the global environmental agenda. nrg4SD also plays an important role in the Major Groups Facilitating Committee, being one of the chairs of that mechanism, represented by the Government of Catalonia. In our continued participation in this forum, the Network tirelessly advocated for a greater integration of the UN Environment, the 2030 Agenda and other UN agendas, as well as to demand a stronger recognition of the role regional governments have in this process.
As this year’s theme is pollution, nrg4SD participation in UNEA will also be based on new and exciting collaboration with UN Environment, with the promotion of the BreatheLife Campaign among regional governments. By becoming the facilitator of the campaign, nrg4SD aims to mobilize subnational governments from all around the world to take actions to tackle air pollution, by setting air quality targets and sharing expertise and best practices with the different subnational governments and experts that are part of this initiative.
Furthermore, many other events will take place in the framework of the Assembly. Some events that we highlight:
- 27-28 November: the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum will discuss the enhancement of stakeholder participation in UNEA. It is a self-organized event by Major Groups and Stakeholders accredited to UN Environment, and will enable participants to share knowledge and expertise on the topic, as well as coordinate inputs for both the Open-ended meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (OECPR) and the Assembly itself.
- 29 November – 1 December: Third Open-ended meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives will be the final opportunity before the UNEA for Member-States and engaged stakeholders to share progress of resolutions adopted in previous Assembly meetings, as well as to refine and negotiate new decisions and outcomes.
- 2-3 December: The Science, Policy and Business Forum will bring top scientists, citizen groups, policymakers and business leaders to promote science-driven policies to address environmental challenges, while focusing on the achievement of the SDGs.
- 4-6 December 2017: the Sustainable Innovation Expo will provide a platform for the private sector to engage with government officials and to present and showcase innovative technology to tackle the world’s environmental challenges while protecting the planet for future generations. It is considered the Assembly’s platform for sharing innovative technology.
