The 6th World Water Forum entitled ‘Time for Solutions’ took place in Marseille, France from 12 to 17 March 2012, in order to reach concrete commitments on water management by different levels of representatives.

On 14 March from 5:30 - 7:00pm, nrg4SD and Regions-United-FOGAR co-organised the Session of Regions and Federated States in the framework of the 3rd International Conference of Local and Regional Authorities. This Session provided the opportunity for regions, federated states and subnational governments from around the world to showcase their experiences towards better water management. Agenda available here.

This Session provided an opportunity for regions, federated States and subnational governments from the five continents to present, each with their own specificities, the prospective actions of planning and management of water resources implemented in their territories. One of the strengths of regional governments is to be able to offer mid and long-term strategic visions while acting as close to citizens as possible. Through the mobilisation of our networks, this session brought a specific contribution to the debate, namely the illustration of the added value of the territorial approach and the multilevel governance. In the framework of the Forum, local and regional representatives had the opportunity to exchange and present practical solutions, create new partnerships and to take part in regional trialogues bringing together national parliamentarians and ministers. In this respect, the coordination of regional policies with national and international policies - such as those carried out by the United Nations - is crucial.

Compilation of subnational experiences of water management

The testimonies, experiences and proposals of regions and subnational actors raised through a call for contributions have been compiled into a compendium of regional case studies on water management in order to fully input into the ambition of the 6th World Water Forum and contribute to the success of the 3rd International Conference of Local and Regional Authorities.

The compendium is available here (EN) - FR version - ES version
