General Assembly meeting 2016

The 2016 annual General Assembly meeting of nrg4SD was held on 29 and 30 June 2016 in Barcelona at the Art Nouveau Site of Sant Pau in Barcelona.

The meeting was attended by the Presidents, Ministers or Vice-Ministers of the Canary Islands, Catalonia, the Council of Governors of Kenya, Fatick, Gossas, La Réunion, Rabat Salé Kenitra, Rhône Alpes, Saint Louis and the Western Province of Sri Lanka; as well as senior officers from Azuay, the Basque Country, Flanders, Lombardy, Quebec, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo. In addition, representatives of Jalisco and the Aichi Prefecture took part in the open sessions of the meeting as observers. The broad representation of nrg4SD members in the General Assembly meeting -18 delegations from 4 continents and 12 countries- stated the strong political commitment of members with the Network and the leadership nrg4SD is showing in the climate adaptation, biodiversity and sustainable development fields.

Relevant decisions were made in terms of the Network’s governance, such as the election of Flanders as the new Co-President of the North; approving the adhesion as new members of the Council of Governors of Kenya, North Sumatra, the Canary Islands and Saint Louis; or approving the creation of a Board of Advisers.

In terms of ongoing projects, the General Assembly welcomed the results of the visiting experts program developed in 2015 and of the progress to date of the RegionsAdapt initiative; whereas supported the launch of the call for projects, the Biodiversity Learning Platform for Subnational Governments and the Guide for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals at subnational level.

An assessment of the next activities and events ahead was made and action and political support were ensured towards the performance of nrg4SD at the High Level Political Forum under the ECOSOC, the Habitat III Conference, the UNFCCC COP 22 and the CBD COP 13.

After a significant discussion on the branding and outreach of the Network, a new communication strategy will be put forward in 2017.

The next General Assembly meeting will be hosted by La Réunion, in Saint Denis, in 2017.
