Global Task Force of Local and Regional Governments for Post 2015 and Habitat III

Nrg4SD is part of the Task Force headed by UCLG which aims to synergize efforts of local and regional governments, also to build a joint strategy and to develop a shared position at the international debates. This idea is aligned to ongoing discussions for widening the participation of civil society and relevant stakeholder in the processes that define the global agenda. Therefore, under the principle of inclusiveness, this taskforce begins an open process of close consultation with partner organizations.

The Global Task Force is based in the prominence of three core international debates: the UN Development Agenda for the post-2015, the Rio+20 decision to set the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and finally the UN Habitat III (2016) and the “New Urban Agenda”.

Moreover, this initiative is linked to the establishment of the High-level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda by the UN Secretary-General, in June 2012. The Panel shall feed into the Secretary’s actions and reports before UN Member States. Besides, the the High-level Panel is expected to publish a report, stating its position and recommendations for the post-2015 development agenda by May 2013.

Among the celebrities pointed to compose the panel, UK Prime Minister David Cameron, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, of Indonesia, were named as co-chairs. Furthermore, Mr. Kadir Topbas, Mayor of Istanbul and President of UCLG, is also a member of the High-level Panel and promised to represent the voice of all local and regional authorities during the panel discussions.

The first meeting of the Task Force occurred on 19-20 March in Istanbul, Turkey, and emphasized the potential of the participation of local and regional authorities at the new development agenda. More concretely, the group highlighted the necessity to ensure a people centered approach, as well as values and key areas that should be included in any action or goal set henceforth.
