In partnership with nrg4SD, the Government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul has the honor of inviting you to participate in the International Conference on Water Resources and RegionsAdapt – integrating multi-stakeholder action to improve climate adaptation, which will be held in the city of Porto Alegre (Brazil) on June 27 and 28, 2017.
As a founding member of the RegionsAdapt initiative and co-coordinator of its Working Group on Water Resources and Management, the State of Rio Grande do Sul will host this Conference to discuss the interlinkages between water and climate adaptation, aiming at improving the management of water resources in the face of climate change. More specifically, the Conference aims to enhance the effectiveness of policies in the field of water adaptation, by promoting a better coordination among countries, different levels of government and the scientific community.
Therefore, this event will represent a unique opportunity for all nrg4SD and RegionsAdapt members to meet up and exchange information in person, showcase actions, strengthen engagement, and build successful partnerships. Moreover, this Conference is of significant importance for regional governments of the Southern Cone of South America in particular, since it expects to pay special attention to the common challenges faced by this subcontinent under the influence of climate change.
In this sense, the Conference will include panels such as:
- “Building Bridges – The contributions of scientific research to adaptation to climate change.” Within such a complex theme as adaptation to climate change, synergies between governmental and scientific agendas are fundamentally needed. The scientific community can definitely contribute to the elaboration and improvement of public policies related to climate change. How is it possible to establish, nevertheless, a fluid and long-lasting relationship between the state, academia and society?
- “8th World Water Forum: expectations and common positions regarding the thematic of water resources management & adaptation to climate change.” In 2018, Brazil will be the host country of the 8th World Water Forum. In view of this opportunity, this panel has the objective of sharing expectations for regional governments, as well as proposing a discussion about the themes that deserve to be highlighted and the possibilities for regional governments´ actions within the Forum.
- “In search of a hydrometeorological monitoring network in the Platine Basin.” Exploring possibilities to integrate different levels of government and to create a unified network between Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay for improved disaster risk management in the context of climate change.
