Following Resolution A/RES/64/236, the Rio +20 Bureau’s invitation to all relevant stakeholders to provide their inputs and contributions by 1st November 2011, and the 65th UNGA encouragement to support preparations in the run-up to the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, the Government of Catalonia prepared a contribution to compilation document to serve as basis for preparing the zero draft of the outcome document of Rio+20.
The Government of Catalonia, as a subnational governmental stakeholder, has the constitutional attribution of powers to develop and implement laws, policies and strategies which have direct impact on sustainable development and which also are essential to structuring the Catalan territory from the social, economic and environmental point of view.
This Catalan contribution is the result of a multi-stakeholder consultation and dialogue that started last June and consisted of several meetings with relevant economic and social Catalan agents and local authorities with approximately 100 participants. A final public session with UNDESA and UNEP representatives was held on 5 October 2011, and a call for contributions to the present document was opened to the whole of Catalan society.
