Rio +20 informals: nrg4SD participates at high level debate

On 23 April on the first day of the second round of informals for Rio +20, the Government of Catalonia as Co-chair North of nrg4SD participated in a High-level debate organised by United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and UN-Habitat, with the support of Cities Alliance where local, regional and subnational governments presented 8 key recommendations towards Rio+20 to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20 takes place from 20 - 22 June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

From 13 to 15 June, nrg4SD will take part in the last UN preparatory meeting for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development Rio +20.

The first meeting of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Advisory Committee of Subnational Governments took place on 24-27 April 2012 in Curitiba, Paraná (Brazil).

nrg4SD engagement in UNEP's annual meetings

From 18 - 22 February 2012 in Nairobi, Kenya, nrg4SD took part for another year in the annual meetings of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This year the 13th Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum of UNEP  and 12th special session of its Governing Council/Global Ministerial marked the 40th anniversary of UNEP. Thanks to its accreditation within the Local Authorities Major Group, nrg4SD participated in these sessions in its capacity of member of Major Groups Facilitating Committee.

Catalonia announces 2012 Environment Award

The Ministry of Territory and Sustainability of the Generalitat de Catalunya would like to announce the 2012 Environment Award of the Generalitat of Catalonia to recognise the work of individuals and legal entities for the environment.

The prize has three categories:

1. Research projects, development and innovation
2. Initiatives to protect and improve the environment
3. Professional Career to protect and improve the environment

Catalonia announces Ramon Margalef prize

The Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainability of the Department of Territory and Sustainability of the Generalitat de Catalunya would like to open up submissions for the 2012 Ramon Margalef Prize to recognise people or groups all over the world who have distinguished themselves in the field of ecological science. The Prize was first established in 2004 and is awarded annually.

nrg4SD Climate Change Policy Papers

nrg4SD Secretariat has produced a series of documents in order to help its members understand the international Climate change framework.
These documents include Overviews, Quick guides, Rough guides and a Glossary, and they have a particular focus on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the agreements resulting from international negotiations such as COP16 in Cancun, Mexico.

Catalonia's contribution to the draft zero compilation document for Rio+20

Following Resolution A/RES/64/236, the Rio +20 Bureau’s invitation to all relevant stakeholders to provide their inputs and contributions by 1st November 2011, and the 65th UNGA encouragement to support preparations in the run-up to the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, the Government of Catalonia prepared a contribution to compilation document to serve as basis for preparing the zero draft of the outcome document of Rio+20.

nrg4SD Biodiversity documents

Accredited to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, nrg4SD worked closely with the Secretariat of the Convention in the run up to COP 10 in Nagoya towards the elaboration of the Plan of Action on Subnational Governments, Cities and Local Authorities. During its participation in COP 10 in Nagoya, nrg4SD highlighted the key role of subnational governments in biodiversity preservation and was honoured to be given a prominent role in the historic Decision X/22 adopting the Plan of Action.
