The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20 takes place from 20 - 22 June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
From 17 to 19 June, just after the last preparatory meeting of the UN for the Rio +20 Conference and before the Conference itself, nrg4SD will convene its annual statutory meetings - Steering Committee and annual General Assembly -, hold sessions of its working groups and celebrate its 10th anniversary after its creation at World Summit of Johannesburg in 2002. The highlight of this 3-day programme will take place on 19 June with the organisation of a World Summit of Federated States and Regions which will bring together intermediate governments for around the Globe committed to adopt a concrete set of inititiaves and implement specific action on key drivers for sustainable development at subnational level.
In co-organising the Summit, nrg4SD and the host State of Rio de Janeiro, are collaborating and reaching out to to like minded organisations and UN entities. A Green Economy Coalition of Federated States and Regions is being set up with the organisation The Climate Group. The Climate Group is an independent, not-for-profit organization, which brings together a global coalition of States and Regions, brands and public figures and tiressly pushes for policies, technologies and investment to make the Clean Revolution commercially viable and empower a smarter, better and more prosperous future for all.
The outcomes of the Summit will feed into the crucial international discussions to take place at the Rio +20 Conference and demonstrate how Federated States, Regions, Provinces and other intermediate governments from the five continents are committed to keep up their bold action towards the sustainable development of their territories in close collaboration and complementarity with all other levels of government and partnership with the private sector.
As in 2011, over the coming months the nrg4SD will continue engaging and participating directly in the Rio +20 process, following the recent publication of the zero draft of the outcome document of the Rio +20 Conference. Practical information
Travel arrangements and accommodation – The UN highlights that all participants to Rio+20 are responsible for their own travel and accommodation in Rio de Janeiro. For the activities co-organised with the State of Rio de Janeiro, our host is in the process, along with the kind suppport of the State of São Paulo of helping to organise a block booking for nrg4SD members. The official booking system put in place by the Brazilian government gives priority for reservations of national delegations and complicates the possibility of having a block booking for nrg4SD. nrg4SD members who will participate at Rio +20 as part of their respective national delegations are encouraged to look into this as soon as possible. In any case, taking into account the complexity of the situation and the large number of participants expected for the UN Conference, nrg4SD members are strongly encouraged to begin planning their trips now.
