Wallonia has the aim of decreasing its GHG-emission by 80-95% by 2050 and by 30% by 2020. In its “Declaration of Walloon regional policy 2009-2014”, now surpassed by the Walloon Air-Climate-Energy Plan 2014-2022”, the government commits itself to these targets, which are in accordance with the “Walloon Air-Climate Plan” and the “Plan for the sustainable energy management”. The region aims to establish its own low carbon roadmap and until 2011, has supported a study to analyse the feasibility of 80 to 95 % reduction of greenhouse gases by 2050. On the basis of this study, decision-makers could develop policies and measures. Moreover, a legal framework “Climate Decree” has been developed which sets short-, middle- and long-term GHG-emission reduction goals.
The region has a Walloon Forestry Code since 2008 to ensure the sustainable use of forestry resources and has also implemented a forest certification scheme (PEFC). Moreover, Wallonia has established a platform on ecosystem services in its administration. Concerning sustainable development, governance in Wallonia has focused on initiatives to issue a Walloon sustainable development plan and to integrate sustainable development into the major economic strategies of the region.
